That means the value of their life is dependent upon market forces and demand. They do not have a voice us humans need to protect them and give them a voice and this is where the concept of animal rights is rooted. Animals should be granted the same rights as humans first because just like humans they have the capacity to suffer.
The reason that people have rights is to prevent unjust suffering. Supporters of animal rights believe that animals have an inherent wortha value completely separate from their usefulness to humans. But I have misgivings about the rights approach.
This is a logically untenable position. Animals deserve to have the same rights as humans do. Opponents of animal rights argue that animals do not think or reason on their own so much that they need no rights.
All animals have emotions and memories and they are all smart in their own ways. Our legal system may be structured in such a way as to see rights holders. Animals should have their own set of rights that protect them from abuse neglecting and wrong treatment.
